PIONEER A400 & A300

Picture
Launched back in 1990, the Pioneer A400 was your typical run of the mill "Jap Amp" with a difference. Pioneer stripped out everything that was not needed and used a quite a few high quality audiophile components where necessary to give the world the A400, an amplifier designed to please even the most ardent UK audiophile.

The Pioneer almost immediately got rave reviews in the hi-fi press, won awards and sold by the lorry load. In the 18 months since it was first launched nearly 25,000 of these amplifiers were sold which accounted for a staggering 12.8% of the total market share. The Pioneer was a giant killer which wiped the floor with almost every other amplifier in its price bracket and many more above it.

I remember listening to it at a friend's house and hearing the punchy and dynamic yet detailed sound it produced. Power was something the Pioneer A400 was not short of and it drove my friend's giant 5 foot floor standers with ease. The only downside with the A400 was a relative poor phono preamp and a tendency to sound a little harsh but it was very difficult to criticise it for the money.

The Pioneer A400 was subsequently superceded by the inferior A400X ensuring it became something of a cult machine, something that would keep its value high even on the second hand market.
